Intracytoplasmic microinjection consists of the introduction of a single spermatozoon inside the oocyte.

This technique is indicated for men whose semen samples have a very low quality or who present a total absence of spermatozoa in their sperm, since in such cases spermatozoa may be obtained directly from the epididymis or testicle in a minor operation called a testicular biopsy.
